The author's first novel, which introduces Joe Pickett, the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming.  Twelve Sleep is a place where everyone hunts, but may not follow the rules.  Pickett does follow the rules, however, which tdoesn't make him the most popular guy in town, so when a local hunter is found dead in his back yard, Pickett takes it personally.
